RIDERS REPORT
A Timeless Tradition
The History of Combined Driving
Every sport has a beginning, and Combined Driving’s story reaches back centuries—long before timers, judges, and ribbons. In the days when carriages were a lifeline of travel and ceremony, drivers were admired for their command of reins and horse alike. Skill behind the lines was not only practical, but a mark of elegance and pride.
In the early 1970s, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh—an accomplished horseman—was instrumental in shaping this tradition into the sport we know today. Inspired by eventing, he developed a three-phase structure that celebrates every aspect of horsemanship:
Dressage: Precision, elegance, and harmony between horse and driver.
Marathon: Speed, stamina, and courage across challenging terrain.
Cones: Accuracy and focus, where every fraction of an inch matters.Today, Combined Driving is a celebration of heritage and community. At every event, you’ll find not only competition, but also camaraderie among drivers, horse owners, grooms, and fans. It is both a nod to the artistry of the past and an inspiration for the future.
The result is a sport often called the “triathlon of carriage driving”—demanding, beautiful, and rooted in history.
As we launch this site, we look forward to honoring that history while sharing the stories, results, and upcoming events that keep this incredible sport alive.
